Abstract

In the third quarter of 2008, the Taiwanese stock market continued to perform weakly and the unemployment rate in the country rose, developments which were related to the financial crisis in the United States and Europe and the ensuing slowdown in economic growth. This also had an impact on consumer spending in Taiwan, with consumers becoming more circumspect in spending their money. Taiwanese mobile phone market sales in the third quarter of 2008 are estimated at 1.80 million units, up 9.1% sequentially due to the back-to-school demand, but down 2.1% compared to the same period last year.
